The Mirembe (Peace) African Village project is creating safe environments for women and their children who are survivors of domestic violence in Uguanda, Africa. The project began after the founder of the Heather Hurley Foundation, Nicole Sharpe, visited Uganda on a missions trip in 2019. A local pastor, with the passion of helping the vulnerable and often times, rejected population of victims of domestic abuse, reached out to Nicole for assistance. They combined efforts to form a more organized method to truly assist this vulnerable population. Through the Heather Hurley Foundation, the current 15 ladies and their 55 children are able to smile again as they can now envision a hope for a better future.
The Mirembe African Village has helped these women and their children escape the cycle of abuse by teaching the mothers to be self sufficient, so no perceived need to return to the abuser would arise. In some instances, the project has relocated the women and their children to a safer more peaceful environment.
Through donations, the project has been able to offer mini start-up business grants to women with clear business plans. In addition, a boutique, named "Heather Hurley Fashions", by the local pastor and his wife, was opened in April of 2021. While the front room of the boutique helps to generate funding for the project, the back room is where certain ladies in the program are being trained to sew clothing, bags, etc. This way, they can generate income that is needed for their families.
Our ultimate Goal is to build an actual Mirembe African Village, complete with temporary emergency housing, workshops, a farm, a school, etc. so that the families could be together in a safer, peaceful and controlled space.
We at the Heather Hurley Foundation are proud of what this young project has accomplished so far with support from Partners like you! Just click on the Donate button below to see your money go to a worthy cause. Thank you and Mirembe!
